Historic Home Remodeling in Austin, TX

Thoughtful renovations for Austin's historic and character homes, with deep care and respect for what makes them worth preserving.

Historic Homes Need More Than a Standard Remodel

Historic homes have stories worth preserving. Our job is helping them continue serving the families who live in them today.

Whether it's a 1920s bungalow in Hyde Park, a Craftsman in Clarksville, a mid-century home in Allandale, or a historic property in Old West Austin, remodeling an older home requires a very different approach than remodeling a house built twenty years ago.

These homes were built in a different era, often with different materials, construction methods, and expectations for how people lived. The charm that makes them special is often tied directly to the details that can be easiest to lose during a renovation.

RedOven Builds approaches historic home remodeling with equal parts curiosity, technical expertise, and respect. Before discussing finishes or floor plans, we focus on understanding the home itself. Our plan depends on how it was built, what has changed over time, what is performing well, and where thoughtful improvements can make the greatest impact today.

Historic Homes Require a Different Level of Investigation

One of the biggest misconceptions about historic remodeling is that it's simply a standard renovation in an older house.

In reality, older homes often contain layers of construction spanning decades. A home built in the 1930s may have additions from the 1960s, electrical updates from the 1980s, plumbing modifications from the 1990s, and cosmetic renovations completed just a few years ago. What appears straightforward on the surface can quickly become much more complex once walls, floors, and ceilings are opened.

We've encountered:

  • Structural modifications completed long before current building standards existed
  • Multiple generations of electrical and plumbing systems working together
  • Hidden water damage concealed behind previous renovations
  • Original windows, trim, and millwork worth preserving
  • Poorly executed additions that disrupt the home's flow and performance
  • Foundations and framing systems that require careful evaluation before new work begins

Our experience and expertise allow us to explain how a home's unique details affect the project and help homeowners make informed decisions when they arise.

Our process is designed to bring structure to that complexity. We start by understanding the home as it is today, then work with you, your architect, designer, and any needed consultants to create a plan that feels clear before work begins. That includes identifying what can stay, what needs attention, and where thoughtful updates can make the home more livable.

Common Questions About Historic Home Remodeling

Older homes tend to come with their own set of questions. Here are a few we often talk through with homeowners before a historic remodel begins.

What affects the cost of a historic home remodel?expand_more

The biggest factors affecting cost are the home's age, condition, scope of work, and how much of the original structure is being modified. Projects that involve major layout changes, additions, structural work, or significant system upgrades typically require more investigation and coordination than cosmetic renovations alone.

Historic homes also tend to reveal conditions that weren't visible during initial planning. Outdated electrical systems, aging plumbing, previous renovations, structural modifications, and hidden water damage are all common discoveries in older homes.

Our goal during pre-construction is to identify as many of these factors as possible early in the process so clients can make informed decisions before construction begins. While no historic renovation comes with complete certainty, careful planning significantly reduces surprises later.

See our cost guide for further information to help you plan.

What should I know before remodeling an older home?expand_more

Older homes rarely have one clean construction history. A 1930s home may include original framing, a 1970s addition, 1990s plumbing updates, and a more recent cosmetic remodel.

That layered history is part of what makes the work interesting, but it also means the process needs room for investigation, conversation, and thoughtful decisions along the way.

How do you decide what to preserve in an older home?expand_more

We look at each element through a few lenses:

  • Is it original or historically significant?
  • Is it structurally sound or realistically repairable?
  • Does it contribute to the home’s character?
  • Does it still function well for modern living?
  • Would replacing it harm the integrity of the home?
  • Would preserving it create ongoing maintenance or performance issues?

We cannot and should not preserve everything. The goal is to protect what matters while making the home more livable, durable, and functional for the family who lives there now.

How long does a historic home remodel take?expand_more

How long does a historic home remodel take?

Most historic home remodels take 8 to 18 months from design through construction, depending on the scope of work and the condition of the home.

As a general rule:

  • Kitchen, bathroom, or partial-home renovations: 4–8 months
  • Major historic renovations: 8–14 months
  • Whole-home remodels with additions: 12–18+ months

Historic homes often require additional investigation, design coordination, permitting, and occasional adjustments when hidden conditions are uncovered during construction. That's why we focus heavily on pre-construction planning—investing more time upfront usually leads to a smoother construction process and fewer surprises later.

We would rather provide a realistic timeline based on the home in front of us than promise a schedule that doesn't account for the realities of remodeling an older property. You'll know much more about your specific timeline when we begin to plan together.

Do you work with architects and designers?expand_more

Yes. Most historic home remodels involve architects, interior designers, engineers, preservation consultants, and specialty trades.

We can collaborate with your existing team or help connect you with the right professionals for the project. Our role is to bring construction expertise into the conversation early so design, budget, constructability, and long-term performance stay aligned.
