ADU Builder in Austin, TX

Custom Space That Brings More to Your Property

An ADU Designed for How You’ll Use It

An accessory dwelling unit can add a surprising amount of possibility to a property. It can give you a private place for family or guests, create a dedicated home office, provide more flexibility as your needs change, or simply make better use of a backyard that has room to do more.

At RedOven Builds, we approach ADU construction in Austin with the same level of planning and coordination we bring to a custom home. Because while the footprint may be smaller, the decisions aren't.

Every property brings its own constraints. Existing structures, mature trees, utilities, access, zoning, drainage, and the way you already use your outdoor space all influence what makes sense. We work with you, your architect, designer, engineers, and other consultants to understand those conditions early and create a clear path from feasibility through construction.

Whether you're considering a detached backyard casita, guest house, office, or a fully independent second dwelling, we'll help you understand what the project requires before construction begins.

A Clear, Thoughtful Process for Building Your ADU

A successful ADU starts with understanding what's possible on your specific property.

We begin by learning what you want the new space to accomplish, then evaluate the site, project scope, budget, and design considerations that will shape it. From there, we work closely with your design team to resolve details, develop realistic pricing, coordinate permitting, and prepare the project for construction.

That early work matters, especially on Austin properties where a relatively small building may need to fit around an existing home, trees, utilities, setbacks, and limited site access.

Our goal is to help you make informed decisions before you're deep into plans or construction.

Common Questions About Building an ADU in Austin

Building an ADU involves many of the same decisions as building a custom home, along with a few property-specific questions of its own.

What can an ADU be used for?expand_more

Your ADU can be designed around what your household needs. We've seen these spaces function as guest accommodations, private living spaces for extended family, home offices, independent residences, and flexible spaces that can change with a family over time.

The right layout depends on how you want the building to function now and how you'd like it to serve your property in the future.

Can I build an ADU on my Austin property?expand_more

Possibly. Austin's HOME amendments expanded the housing options available on many properties, but what you can build still depends on the conditions of your individual lot.

Zoning, lot size, existing structures, trees, utility locations, impervious cover, drainage, easements, deed restrictions, and other site conditions can all affect feasibility.

That's why we recommend evaluating the property before getting too far into design.

Do I need architectural plans before contacting RedOven Builds?expand_more

No. You can contact us while you're still evaluating the idea of building an ADU.

If you already have an architect or designer, we're happy to collaborate with them. If you don't, we can connect you with design professionals we trust.

Getting construction input early can also help you evaluate site conditions, budget, and constructability before the design becomes too far developed.

How much does it cost to build an ADU in Austin?expand_more

The cost to build an ADU in Austin can vary significantly depending on the size of the structure, site conditions, utility connections, architectural complexity, structural requirements, and finish selections.

ADUs can also have a higher cost per square foot than a larger home because many of the most expensive parts of a house, such as the kitchen, bathrooms, mechanical systems, and utility connections, are being incorporated into a much smaller footprint.

For that reason, we don’t recommend using cost per square foot alone to estimate an ADU project. At RedOven Builds, we look at the complete scope, existing property conditions, design, and infrastructure needs to help homeowners understand what goes into the investment.

What Austin’s Current ADU Rules Mean for Your Property

Austin’s HOME Initiative has opened up more possibilities for adding housing to many residential properties. But what’s permitted on paper still depends on the conditions of your individual lot.

Before you get too far into ADU design, important site considerations include:

How We Approach Every Project

1 | Initial Consultation
We start by understanding your goals, priorities, and constraints. This is a working conversation focused on clarity; not just what you want to build, but whether the project makes sense to pursue.
2 | Feasibility & Pre-Construction
We collaborate with you and your design team to align scope, budget, and expectations early. This phase brings structure to the project and reduces uncertainty before construction begins.
3 | Construction & Execution
With a clear plan in place, we move into construction with a focus on consistency, communication, and execution. Every phase is managed with attention to detail and long-term performance in mind.
What’s Typically Included in an ADU Project

Every ADU is shaped by the property and the way you plan to use it. While the footprint may be smaller than your primary home, it still needs to function like a complete building. Thoughtful planning helps make sure every square foot has a purpose, and the new structure feels considered as part of the larger property.
